These dream bars are an old-time South Dakota recipe. Cocoa is an optional ingredient. The recipe is made in two parts.

Ingredients

Original recipe (1X) yields 24 servings

  • ½ cup unsalted butter

  • ½ cup brown sugar

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 ½ cups brown sugar

  • 3 eggs, beaten

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour

  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (Optional)

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • 1 ½ cups flaked coconut

  • 1 cup chopped walnuts

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

  2. Beat butter and 1/2 cup brown sugar together in a medium bowl until smooth. Stir in 1 1/2 cups flour. Press firmly into the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking pan.


  3. Bake in the preheated oven until crust is golden, about 15 minutes.

  4. Combine remaining 1 1/2 cups brown sugar and eggs in a medium bowl. Stir in vanilla. Whisk remaining 1/4 cup flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt together in a separate bowl; stir into egg mixture. Fold in coconut and walnuts; pour into crust.

  5. Bake in the preheated oven until firm, 25 to 30 minutes. Cool, then cut into squares.
