Shrimp Egg Foo Young

This egg foo young recipe includes a delicious sauce to put on top of the patties. This is a very special recipe acquired when I worked at a Chinese restaurant to pay for my red 1966 VW bug when in high school! The recipe card is tattered and spotted now, but the dish is the best egg foo young I have ever had. To serve, place egg patty over steamed rice and put the sauce on top.

This egg foo young recipe makes shrimp omelet-style patties that are light, airy, and full of flavor. The thick Chinese sauce, made with Chinese cooking wine and soy sauce, is the perfect finishing touch.

What Is Egg Foo Young?

Egg foo young is a Chinese fried egg omelet drizzled with a savory, soy sauce-based gravy. It usually features bean sprouts, green onions, and some sort of protein (in this case, shrimp).

How to Make Egg Foo Young

You’ll find the full, step-by-step recipe below — but here’s a brief overview of what you can expect when you make homemade shrimp egg foo young:

  1. Mix the sprouts, shrimp, eggs, green onions, and garlic powder together.
  2. Heat oil in a skillet, form patties, and fry on both sides until golden brown.
  3. Make the sauce on the stove, then simmer until thick.
  4. Spoon the sauce over the patties to serve.

How to Store Egg Foo Young

Store your leftover egg foo young in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat on the stove or in the oven (not in the microwave!) for the best results.

Allrecipes Community Tips and Praise

“Easy, fast, and delicious!" says Evelyn King. "I used fresh mixed sprouts and pre-cooked shrimp. The perfect recipe for an easy delicious meal. I didn't change anything except added more cornstarch to make the sauce a little thicker. The dish is mild so it allows the fresh taste of the sprouts to come through. I'll definitely make it again!”

“This is absolutely the best Egg Foo Young I have ever tasted anywhere!" raves Phil Brooks.

“I worked for a Chinese family in their restaurant while I was a young adult and this comes close to their popular recipe," says Laura Parrino. "I love to eat egg foo young for breakfast!"
