How to keep babies safe when temperatures soar – A Singapore guide

Singapore's tropical climate presents unique challenges when it comes to keeping babies safe and comfortable in the heat. Unlike adults, infants have a limited ability to regulate their body temperature because their sweat glands are still developing and their skin barrier is thinner. This makes them more vulnerable to overheating and heat-related conditions.

Why Babies Overheat More Easily

Babies sweat less efficiently than adults and have a higher surface-area-to-volume ratio, which increases heat absorption. Their sweat glands are still maturing, meaning they struggle to cool down effectively when temperatures rise. This is why maintaining a safe environment is critical, especially in Singapore's warm, humid weather.

Signs Your Baby Is Overheating

Watch for these key indicators that your baby may be too hot:

  • Sweaty hair or damp neck

  • Flushed or red skin (beyond just cheeks)

  • Rapid breathing

  • Restlessness or frequent waking during sleep

  • Hot to the touch on the chest or back

How to Check Your Baby's Temperature

The most reliable way to check if your baby is too hot is to feel the back of their neck or their chest. Hands and feet are naturally cooler and will not give an accurate reading of core body temperature. If the nape feels sweaty or hot, remove a layer or adjust the room temperature.

Recommended Room Temperature and Sleep Environment

Setting

Recommendation

Ideal room temperature

24–26°C (with air-conditioning)

Ideal humidity

40–60%

What to wear

One lightweight cotton layer only

Swaddling

Thin muslin wrap for newborns only; discontinue once baby shows signs of rolling

Headwear

Never cover baby's head during sleep – this increases overheating risk

Safe Cooling Strategies

Air-conditioning is the most reliable way to maintain a safe sleep temperature in Singapore's heat. Set it to 24–26°C and run it continuously overnight rather than using a timer, as rooms can warm up quickly once the AC switches off. Position the cot away from direct airflow and keep vents pointed upward toward the ceiling, not directly at the baby.

Fans can supplement cooling by improving air circulation. Research suggests fan use may help reduce the risk of SIDS by dispersing CO2 accumulation around the baby's face. However, fans should never blow directly on the baby – position them to circulate air across the room instead.

What to Dress Baby In

In Singapore's climate, the "one-layer rule" applies: dress your baby in one fewer layer than you are comfortable wearing. In an air-conditioned room at 24–26°C, a single cotton bodysuit or onesie is usually sufficient.

Room Temperature

Recommended Attire

Below 22°C (aircon)

Cotton onesie + thin sleep sack (0.5 TOG)

22–25°C

Short-sleeve cotton onesie only

25–28°C (fan only)

Short-sleeve cotton onesie or just nappy

Above 28°C

Nappy only or lightweight cotton singlet

Hydration and Feeding Tips

On hot days, ensure your baby stays hydrated. A lack of tears or fewer wet diapers than usual could indicate dehydration. For infants, offer smaller quantities more frequently to maintain adequate fluid intake. Water-rich fruits such as watermelon and strawberries are good snacks for older babies.

Stroller Safety

Avoid covering your stroller with blankets or other coverings, even thin ones, as they trap heat and prevent air circulation. This can raise the temperature inside the stroller significantly. Instead, use the stroller's canopy for shade.

Check metal parts on the stroller before placing your baby in it, as these can heat up and cause burns.

Never Leave Your Child in a Car

Car temperatures can rise dramatically in a short amount of time, even with windows open or in the shade. Always check the back seat before leaving the vehicle and consider placing a personal item in the back to remind you.

What to Do on Very Hot Days

  • Limit outdoor time during the hottest parts of the day (typically late morning to mid-afternoon)

  • Dress your baby in loose, light-coloured clothing made of breathable fabrics like cotton

  • Apply sunscreen to babies over six months of age

  • Ensure adequate fluid intake

  • Use a stroller cooling pad for outings – gel-based pads can reduce contact surface temperature by 3–5°C

When to Seek Medical Attention

Seek medical advice if your baby shows any of these signs:

  • Fever

  • Unusual fussiness or signs of pain

  • Rash that is spreading quickly

  • Swelling or warmth around skin bumps

  • Pus or yellow crusting on the skin

  • Rash that hasn't improved after a few days of cooling measures
